The Blessings of Obedience

The subject of obedience is one that stirs up different emotions in different people. For we live in the kind of culture where masses of people only want to do what they want, when they want to do it, and how they want to and do not want nor appreciate to be told that obedience is required in order to experience all that God has provided for all.

I can tell you without a doubt, that without obedience, I would not be experiencing the freedom and liberty that I have found in Jesus. I would not have the healing in my body that I enjoy today, I would not be free from all of the monsters that had been hounding me such as the monsters of depression, anxiety, despair, and utter misery. For the obedience to God and to His Word commands the blessings over His people.

So many say that they serve the Lord, yet they do it on their own terms. The Lord Jesus said, “And why call ye Me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?” (Luke 6:46) He also said that if we do not do what He says, that we do not love Him. “Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love Me, he will keep My words: and My Father will love him, and We will come unto him, and make Our abode with him. He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not Mine, but the Father’s which sent Me.” (John 14:23,24)

The blessings for obedience are many. Some are immediate and some come with time. But ALL are good for the one who obeys the voice and the commandments of God. “And whatsoever we ask, we receive of Him, because we keep His commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.” (1 John 3:22) And “For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments: and His commandments are not grievous.” (1 John 5:3)

The disobedient grieves the heart of God, for He knows the calamity, destruction, lack of peace and joy, and ultimate death that will ensue for those who do not do what He says. God says, “Oh, that there were such an heart in them, that they would fear me and keep all my commandments always, that it might be well with them, and with their children forever!”  (Deut. 5:29)

The Bible is not like a bag of trail mix. You cannot take the parts you like and leave the rest in the bag. All of God’s Word is true and as surely as all of the blessings are true, so are all of the cursings that will come upon those who are disobedient to His Word. God is not just a God of love. He is a God of justice and judgment, as well.

If you have a family or a corporation, there are rules that must be followed so that there is harmony and all can live and work in peace. If those rules are broken, consequences are invoked; not because you do not love the person, but because it is necessary for the good of the family and for the very one who breaks the rules.

God loves us. Which is why He made His commandments. If He were to allow us to run rampant without any rules of conduct or restraint or warning or instruction, He wouldn’t be loving us at all, for we would destroy ourselves and others. (You can see the affects of children, teenagers, and adults who are reckless, disobedient, and lawless.) “O that thou hadst hearkened to My commandments! Then had thy peace been as a river, and thy righteousness as the waves of the sea:” (Isaiah 48:18)

“And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe and to do all His commandments which I command thee this day, that the Lord thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth: and all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God.” (Deut. 28:1,2) Then the Lord goes on to spell out quite plainly all of the wonderful blessings that the obedient receive.

Partial obedience is not obedience at all. For instance, the Lord told us to forgive those who trespass against us. But if we have something in our hearts towards someone, yet we do “good things,” that is still disobedience.

Search your hearts. Better yet, ask God to search your heart. “Search me, O God, and know my heart. Try me, and know my thoughts: and see if therer be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” (Psalm 139:23,24) Ask Him if there are any areas of disobedience in you and ask Him to cleanse your heart from any and all unrighteousness and He will do just that.

He loves you. He wants you to be blessed. And He continues to bless and extend mercy to us all, even when we don’t deserve it. ESPECIALLY then. For that is what mercy is: not giving us the due reward for our sins, disobedience, and other things that would keep God from blessing us.

Be obedient to God so that it may be well with you. Live by His Word. Do what He says…and your life will never be the same. Guaranteed.

Be blessed.
