I was surfing the Internet, reading articles on Christianity and other subjects, when I came across the word “apologetics,” Being curious, I read up on the subject and must say that I was a bit perturbed. For, in my opinion, Christianity and the existence of God and the validity of Jesus Christ need no defense.
We were not called to defend the gospel. We were called to preach it and let those that we extend the gospel’s invitation to either accept it or reject it. The call is theirs.
It is not for us to justify the Truth. We are to live it. In the end, the Truth will speak for itself.
As I see it, the major reason that Christians are “apologizing” for Christianity is because so many people who are calling themselves by that name are not living by the precepts and principles of the Bible, thereby making it a mockery to many. Many who have made Jesus Christ their Savior have neglected to make them their Lord, as well. Jesus said, “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.” (Matt. 16:24) Many refuse to deny themselves anything, let alone are willing to take up their cross (whatever that cross may be and the cross is not a pleasant or convenient thing, to be sure), and follow Him, no matter where He leads.
Galatians 5:16 says, “This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.” But so many people are not walking in the Spirit. They backbite, are filled with unforgiveness, do no love their neighbor (which is the second greatest commandment, other than that of loving God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength.) Many lie to themselves and others and you would be hard pressed to tell the difference between their Christianity and that of the world. It is no wonder that so many have turned their backs to God and hold Christianity in contempt. As a Christian, I, too, have cringed at the words and actions of those who call themselves my brothers and sisters in Christ.
If you are a Christian, BE a Christian. Don’t just spout off about loving people and then judge them or not help them or be selfish. BE LIKE JESUS. Do the things that Jesus would do.
We don’t have to prove the existence of God. He’s big enough to handle that job Himself. We don’t have to argue the merits of Christianity. Jesus said that if you know the truth, the Truth will make you free. Jesus IS that Truth. Just point the way to Jesus. HE is the One Who will draw all men unto Himself.
So, stop apologizing and start living the Truth. As I said, in the end, it will speak for itself.
